Commerce opening hours are more or less 9.00 to 12.30 and 16.00 to 1930 though take into account that this can change substantially depending on the type of commerce.

The Genova special numbering system: Genova has a particular (and I think unique) way of numbering the streets. Residential houses are market with BLACK numbers whilst businesses are marked with RED numbers. RED addresses are often identified with a "/r" mark when written in papers or guide book (e.g. Via Albaro 23/r).

Obtaining a Codice Fiscale

You definitely want to get a codice fiscale as soon as possible. It is required to do all kinds of essential mundane things, including buying a cell phone, renting an apartment, setting up utilities, etc.

Obtaining one is relatively easy. Go to a local tax office (ufficio locale delle entrate). There are 4 locations in Genova. Foreigners just need to present a valid passport OR a permesso di soggiorno.

The only pieces of information actually needed to generate a Codice Fiscale are your name, date of birth and place of birth. But don't rely on an "unofficially" generated codice fiscale, since it may differ in some silly detail (for example, including or not a middle name) from the one generated by the tax office.

For more information on what the Codice Fiscale is and how to obtain it, see the official page of the Agenzia delle Entrate (in Italian).

  • The AMT site is: http://www.amt.genova.it/ On it you can download a map of Genova's public transport system. You can also obtain a paper map from their offices at Via D'Annunzio 8 R from 8.15 - 15.45, (lunedì - venerdì).
  • Trip Planner: http://www.amt.genova.it/tripmanager/ is an excellent way to calculate a trip from one spot to another. This is available in English and German as well.
  • To buy a ticket that is good for the bus, local train, and any other public transport within Genova (including funiculars and lifts!) find a tabacco shop (has a big white T outside the door) and ask for a ticket ("biglietto per l'autobus"). You can also get these from most edicola -- newspaper stands. It costs 1.20 euro for one ticket or 11 euro (note: the cost changed last 1 Nov 2006, it used to be 9.50) for a packet ("carnet") of 10

  • Or you may want to get a weekly ticket (abbonamento settimanale), which are good from first day of use through Sunday. (NOT good for one week from first use.)
  • A monthly ticket ("abbonamento mensile") is good from first day of use to last day of calendar month.
  • If you buy a daily (3.50 euro), weekly, or monthly ticket, then you can also ride the airport bus (#100) that leaves from Principe station every hour and goes to the airport and back.
  • Tickets need to be cancelled in special machines (see images)

In Italy & Beyond by Train

  • Trenitalia: http://www.trenitalia.com
  • Trenitalia in English: http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html
It is very easy to use one of the big yellow "biglietto veloce" ticket machines in most train stations. You can choose the English option on the first screen and get the ticket you want and pay with a credit card. (Some machines accept cash but they are hard to find.) (I don't know about the ticket counter people's English, it may be adequate.)
Here is a lengthy explanation of how to use the ticket machine and find your train: Trains.
